President Trump and Congressional leaders can’t agree on a budget fix.
Trump wants money for a border wall, even if nobody can agree on what, exactly, a border wall is. Democrats say no way, and while the politicians are figuring it out, 800,000 federal workers are affected by the shutdown. Some are out of work, and others are forced to report to their jobs without pay.
We took the list of Fortune 500 companies from Forbes, and narrowed the list down to the 20 biggest employers in the country. This lets us easily put the “800,00” affected federal workers in context.
It turns out that shutdown is like closing the country’s second biggest employer. Only Walmart, with its footprint of thousands of stores and millions of cashiers, employs more people than the agencies currently shuttered. Huge companies with enormous importance to the economy, like AT&T, Wells Fargo and UPS are only a fraction of the size.
